This paper analyzes the translation of "Oedipus the King" by Olga Weiss, the translation which received unanimous critical approving, what is very rare for the tradition of translation of Greek tragedy in Russia. Weiss’ translation stands out by the combination of tradition and innovation, especially in regard to the two main "stumbling blocks" in the poetic translation, the equality of verse lines and the similarity of metrics. The innovation consists in choosing unaccustomed to poetic translation of the tragedy six-feet iamb (iambic hexameter, but not alexandrine) and differing the strophic pairs for lyric stanzas, the tradition - in the transmission of ancient lyric forms through accentual-syllabic verse with rhymes.
