Outdoor tourism and recreational activities strongly depend on actual meteorological conditions. In the present study, we assess suitability of weather conditions for various forms of outdoor tourism in the Russian part of the Caucasus region. Traditionally, in the studied regions, the peak of tourists’ streams concentrates in summer months. Additionally, we discuss how the geographical location of the station differentiates temporal patterns of weather suitability. We have chosen 11 meteorological stations of Roshydromet (http://meteo.ru/) which represent different tourist regions of the Caucasus (sea coast, foothills and mountains) to analyse the suitability of weather conditions for various forms of outdoor recreation. For each weather station, we used daily data of air temperature, relative humidity, total cloud cover and wind speed (at 10 m above ground) as well as the daily maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation totals and snow cover depth for the period 2000–2019. Suitability of climate for outdoor recreation and tourism was assessed by the Weather Suitability Index (WSI). WSI provides evaluation of each individual weather conditions (with daily resolution) from the point of view of particular forms of recreation: sun bathing (WSI_SB), air bathing (WSI_AB), mild physical activity (e.g. walking, light plays, shopping WSI_MR), intensive physical activity (e.g. football, biking, climbing, jogging, etc. WSI_AR), ski tourism (WSI_ST). The results of research show that passive forms of recreation (sun and air bathing) are preferred mostly in months from June till August for stations located on the sea coast. For active types of recreation, the Caucasus region is suitable almost throughout the year. This creates great opportunities for the development of tourism in the region, not only in the summer months.
