The naming of horses, the ways of referring the horse as well as the functioning of the ‘horse’ theme in general in the texts of the written Akritic epic are considered in the report on the material of Escorial and Grottaferrata versions of the poem about Digenis Akritis and Old Russian texts known as Devgeniyevo Dejanije. By comparing Byzantine and Russian medieval texts by matching descriptions of similar situations analyzing the vocabulary used to describe horses and in particular their color, differences in certain semantic aspects of the representation of horses in these works are revealed.
