Due to the high solubility in common organic solvents, intensive absorption, and luminescence in the visible region (500-600 nm), subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) are prospective materials for photoactive layers of solar cells. The extension of SubPcs π-system leads to novel mono and binuclear analogues, which combine aggregate free behavior of SubPcs and red shift of the main absorption maximum. Moreover, the possibility to combine two different peripheral moieties in one molecule inspires the interest to binuclear subphthalocyanines as prospective materials for nonlinear optics. Novel low symmetry A2B subphthalocyanines 1a-c, containing reactive CN groups were employed as initial compounds for the synthesis of binuclear complexes. The first examples of push-pull binuclear subphthalocyanines 2a-c were reached using mixed cyclization between compounds 1a-c and 4,5-difluoro-phthalonitrile. Nonlinear optical properties of compounds 1 and 2 were compared by Z-scan technique.
