This paper presents the results of the synthesis and combined experimental and theoretical study of new multicomponent crystals of 2-aminonicotinic acid with maleic and fumaric acids. The enthalpy of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds was rated by several empirical methods. The structure-directing role of the water molecule in the explored multicomponent crystals is revealed. Water molecules play the pivotal role in the proton transfer from the carboxyl group of the dicarboxylic acid and the COO– anion of the zwitterion of 2-aminonicotinic acid.
