The first studies of the ternary system Ce-Pt-Al were carried out at 800°C. It should be noted that data on the crystal structure of compounds in the Pt-rich corner were contradictory. The solid-state equilibria in the ternary system Ce-Pt-Al at 700°C were established by means powder X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy on about 110 alloys which were synthesized by arc- melting under argon atmosphere. At 700°C twenty-one ternary intermetallics were found. Sixteen compounds have a fixed composition. While five compounds in the Pt-rich corner are variable in composition. A new homologous series CePtnAln with n=2, 3 was found. CePt2Al2 compound undergoes a structural phase transition from the low-temperature orthorhombic modification to the high-temperature tetragonal modification at 280(1)°C
