The north of Western Siberia continues to be intensively involved in economic development, primarily due to oil and gas miningand the growth of transport infrastructure including gas pipelines and seaports. Permafrost with widespread tabular ground iceand ice wedges, greatly complicates the economic activity. Modern climate warming leads to an increase in the temperature ofpermafrost and active layer thickness. The dynamics of changes in permafrost state under natural conditions with technogenicimpact lead to an activation of permafrost processes, making them hazardous and catastrophic in relation to already existinginfrastructure facilities. A map of the distribution of permafrost processes on the Yamal Peninsula has been compiled (Streletskaya et al., In preparation).The map shows manifestations of permafrost processes and phenomena in various conditions - depending on their spatialconfinement to different geological and geomorphological conditions (stratigraphic and genetic complexes of Quaternarysediments, lithological types of the section and ice content). The following permafrost processes have been identified: 1) areas ofwidespread polygonal microrelief on mineral and organogenic soils with wedge ice; 2) accumulation of thermokarst lakes anddepressions; 3) cryogenic landslides; 4) perennial heaving mounds; 5) ravine thermal erosion; 6) lateral erosion and thermalerosion; 7) thermoabrasive shores; 8) aeolian processes.
