We present the results of the study that focused on the relations between non-suicidal self-injuries (NSSI), emotion regulation and dysregulation (EDR) and body dissatisfaction (BD) in a non-clinical sample of the Russian-speaking girls. Methods. The study was conducted online; the participants were members of Russian-speaking ED communities. We present the interim results for 308 girls 16-18 years old (M=16.86, SD=.79), 42 claimed to have a clinically diagnosed eating disorders (ED). We used a questionnaire to assess NSSI and ED, Fear of Negative Appearance Evaluation Scale (Lundgren, 2004), Body Image Questionnaire (Skugarevskii, Sivukha, 2006), Emotion Dysregulation Scale (Polskaya, Razvaliaeva, 2017), and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross, John, 2003). Results. 209 participants, including 38 girls with ED, admitted NSSI. In the overall sample fear of negative evaluation correlated to avoidance (rs=.54), cognitive reappraisal (rs=-.24), rumination (rs=.55), mentalizing difficulties (rs=.49), and body dissatisfaction (rs=.63, all p<.001). Suppression and avoidance correlated in the NSSI subgroup only (rs=.16, p<.05). Logistic regression model (r2=.37) for NSSI identified body dissatisfaction (b=.08, p<.05) and avoidance (b=.36, p<.001) as significant predictors. NSSI endorsers scored higher on body dissatisfaction, rumination, avoidance, mentalizing difficulties, fear of negative evaluation (U=5199), and lower on cognitive reappraisal (Mann-Whitney U-test, all p<.001). Girls with ED scored higher on rumination, avoidance, mentalizing difficulties, body dissatisfaction, fear of negative evaluation (all ps<.001), and lower on cognitive reappraisal (p<.05). Conclusion. While previous studies proved EDR to be a predictor of NSSI, we discovered the role of a negative attitude to one’s body in its maintenance. NSSI is thus a part of a self-destructive pattern, along with restrictive eating practices. The study was supported by RFBR grant no. 20-013-00429.
