The idea was simple – to construct several DEMs based on old detailed maps and the recent data with exactly the same position of “pixels” to analyze the morphometric surface changes over time and to relate it to the paleo climate records in glaciers lakes sediments. Happened to be more complicated than expected. The previews of the constructed maps are in the presentation. The glaciers are retreated as expected, but the elevation of surface near the top of Elbrus is stable or somewhere growing. Means that the accumulation (“supply of material into the glaciers flows”) is more or less stable over last half century. The ablation down in the valleys is responsible for the observed glaciers retreat. Understanding of how this is related to elevation/aspect of slop/slope angle is the on-going task, hopefully to be presented next time. Also interesting is the “migration” of boundaries between the glaciers.
