Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells located perivascularly in the stroma of most tissues and organs. They are of great interest for modern science and have applications in regenerative medicine: firstly, for autologous transplantation, and secondly, for stimulation of the endogenous mechanisms of repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. Like stem cells, MSCs have the ability to self-renew and differentiate — processes that determine the size of a population and its regenerative potential throughout a person’s life. An aging stem cell population affects both of these properties.
