A permanent motif of the coinage of Tenedos from the late Archaic times is the composite image of two faces on the obverse. The appearance of a labrys on the reverse (surrounded by attributes like grapes, vessels, wreaths) strengthens the theme of binary unity. Many interpretations exist in scholarship regarding this imagery, and its connections to the cults of Tenedos are often discussed. In this paper, I would like to offer a structural approach, and take a look at other occurrences of double-faced representations in Greek art – for example, janiform kantharoi. Perhaps the examination of the types of relationships such compositions denote can enrich our understanding of this motif on the coins of Tenedos.
