The cleavage of chemical bonds in the main chain and the conformational variability of radicals in polymers are enhanced when irradiation is supported by heating. As a result, the assortment of light radiolysis products changes, and their yield increases. The combined mode is energy-saving (dose 150 kGy at 230 - 450C) due to the initiation of chain decomposition of macro-radicals and peroxides. This approach promotes the conversion of both separable and non-separable polymer wastes into standard and alternative fuels, into common and “green” monomers, into liquid binders for the subsequent formation of plastic-containing composites, as well as into other valuable chemicals. The method minimizes the formation of gases, charred residue and ash, and therefore is more environmentally friendly compared to pyrolysis and incineration of polymer waste. Under aerobic conditions, the method can serve as the basis for accelerated testing of plastics degradability, as well as for converting plastics into easily sortable or biodegradable form.
