What is a literary region? This question can lead to an immense range of answers. One of the possible answers is that a literary region is a fragment of literary space that is connected with certain writers. Each literary region possess a number of specific features of nature, culture and history, as well as a particular structure of literary places within it and a unique composition of the regional text that distinguishes it from other literary regions. How does it form? Two major processes are engaged in the establishment of a literary region, these are the literary depiction process and the memorization process. The former is based on the establishment of associative literary images of places and the regional text formation, which embodies a system of literary and non-literary (nature, culture, etc.) components. Space memorization is the process of saturating cultural space with memorial literary landmarks. On the basis of the correlation between two major literary region formation processes five stages of the literary region formation could be identified: the stage of primary literary depiction of the territory, the stage of literary depiction, the primary stage of memorization, the stage of memorization and the contemporary stage of memorization. Studying literary regions deals with many other questions. How can we identify the borders of a literary region? Who should we consider regional writers? How do the regional features influence the works of writers and how is the regional text formed (text as a composition of literary works of different writers dedicated to the region and text connections, including intertextual links)?
