Ionic liquids, i.e. low-temperature molten salts became the frontline of the modern research related to diverse areas, including energy storage systems, catalysis, fine organic synthesis, nanomaterials synthesis and even more, drug delivery. Pros and contras for ionic liquids are summarized in the lecture. Numerous examples of applications of ionic liquids in diverse areas, including, inter alia, the use as heat transfer liquids and coating of lunar telescopes are discussed from the point of view of the reasonable balance between the cost and efficiency, as well as environmental impact and ecotoxicity of ionic liquids.
