Premchand, one of the greatest writers of India and the founder of realism in the Urdu and Hindi literatures, was greatly influenced by the works of L. N. Tolstoy, which he translated, and by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. Their ideas of Non-violence and love to their Mother land and sympathy to the common people influenced the writer and are reflected in his stories and novels.
