The single transferable vote (STV) is recognized by election researchers as “the best” electoral system as it totally meets demands of democracy. Nevertheless, some disadvantages are unavoidable. The system is difficult to be made use of because of the voting process complexity. So the range of countries, where the STV is applicable is not wide. Voting practices in Australia and Ireland represent the STV in different ways: in the former case it keeps functioning through the current party system, and the latter one shows its functioning with the essential help of the electorate. So can the STV indeed be considered “the best” voting system?
