Experimental adaptation of Drosophila melanogaster to nutrient-deficient starch-based medium resulted in lifespan shortening, accelerated reproductive ageing, and sexually dimorphic survival curves. The results are partially compatible with Williams’ hypothesis about the evolution of ageing. Flies reared in a spatially heterogeneous environment adapted more successfully to unfavourable diets and evolved longer lifespans than those reared in a homogenous environment. The results do not support the antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis and show easy evolution of generalists.
