The results of most studies, including one conducted by us in relation to mass communication journals, show that open access provides an advantage not only in the wider spread of information about a research, the increase of view statistics and mentions in social networks, as well as in wiki-projects, but also in citation, although, perhaps not as significant as previously thought. It is also important to understand that open access alone is incapable of ensuring that the scientific community recognizes the importance of an article and only gives researchers more freedom in choosing the content that, in their opinion, deserves attention. Particularly, it has been shown by the results of studies on the dependence of citations on the impact factor for subscription journals and open access ones: in the first case the chances that article of a scientist will be noticed directly depend on the indicators of the journal, but in the second case this connection does not exist. This means that open access can return competition to the scientific publishing market. Thus it can contribute to solving the problem of too high prices, although the role of brands will certainly preserve the positions of traditional publishers.
