Potassium channels are key regulators of arterial smooth muscle membrane potential and arterial tone. Cardiovascular system undergoes crucial structural and functional alterations during maturation. We demonstrated that the impact of the most potassium channels types in the regulation of arterial tone is higher in young (10-15 days old) than in adult rats. This can serve as a mechanism keeping peripheral resistance low in the immature cardiovascular system.
