The paper explores the functioning of contemporary poetic text, the cognitive framework of its perception, and the principles of assimilating an alien tradition through an analysis of the interaction between Russian and Chinese poetry. It centers on the influence of the Chinese poetic tradition, its poetics, and language, on contemporary Russian poetry and vice versa. Textual structures of Russian and Chinese poetry (text length and line length, linearity/nonlinearity of syntactic links) are analyzed within the framework of communicative strategies and their reference to contrasting characteristics of “clarity/hermeneutics,” “communication/auto-communication,” “narration/lyrics.” The “Russian text” of Chinese poetry presents an intertext, often explicitly marked by the names of Russian Silver Age poets. The texts of the Golden Age of Russian poetry or authors of the second half of the 20th century do exist in Chinese, but they are not reflected in the “Russian text” of Chinese poetry, as they do not correspond to the cognitive framework of the Silver Age. At the same time, the “Chinese text” of contemporary Russian poetry seems somewhat more diverse. Russian poets often perceive China within the framework of the classical chinoiserie tradition of Europe, which correlates with many exoticisms or language cliches associated with Chinese traditional culture. Such a stylized perception of China combines with a phonetic and visual assimilation of the Chinese tradition in Russian poetry. For example, poets seek consonance between Chinese and Russian words, pay attention to the character of Chinese writing, which correlates with the graphic appearance of the verse.
