Cyanine dyes (CDs) are widely applied in molecular biology as fluorescence sensors due to their high optical absorbance in the NIR range, intensive fluorescence and great affinity to cell structures and proteins. Some modifications of CD structures are photochemically active, can generate triplet state and as a consequence reactive species of oxygen in biological systems for photochemotherapy. Bis-carbocyanine dyes (BCCs) are a subclass of CDs with two conjugated chromophore systems, which split singlet state to two sublevels. Due to high absorbance, triplet quantum yield and affinity to biological structures BCCs can be considered as promising sensitizers for photodynamic therapy.
