The formation scenario of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) remains a matter of debate with possible origins ranging from being a massive globular cluster to tidal stripping of once more massive galaxy. Here we present a detection of a 3.3+1.4−1.2 × 10^6 Mʘ black hole (1σ uncertainty) in the center of the Fornax-UCD3 galaxy that corresponds to 4 per cent of its stellar mass. This discovery means UCD3 was likely formed from a progenitor with spheroidal component mass of about 2 × 10^9 Mʘ via tidal stripping.
