Visual illusions have provided researchers with important insights into the rules of how the visual system interprets environmental information. Lately, new virtual reality (VR) techniques were applied successfully to investigate visual perception. Using HMD and CAVE visualization systems, we studied the strength of 3D visual illusions to find out the role of the disparity cue in illusion perception. The effect of depth cues on illusion perception has been shown in many studies, but the results were contradictory. We used different types of illusions - geometrical, lightness and brightness illusions. 38 observers (14 male, 24 female) with normal or corrected to normal vision were tested. Stereo pairs of original illusions were presented in 2D (disparity = 0) and 3D (4 values of disparity) configurations. The results of the experiment indicated that the strength of SLC illusions changed in different ways for different types of illusions. The differences in illusion perception were discussed in terms of Scene based theory (Gregory,1963) and the albedo hypothesis.
