Complex organic compounds including PAH can survive during low-speed collisions of comets with planets. Pyrene is tentatively detected in the comet Halley, but search for pyrene in the interstellar medium gave negative results. Identification of pyrene in cometary spectra is possible on the basis of ab initio simulation of its vibronic absorption and emission spectra in the gas phase and in a matrix. Matrix effects are extremely important for the vibronic bandshapes of pyrene.
