Vascular consequences of thyroid deficiency in early development may persist in adult age even if the levels of thyroid hormones are restored. Augmented activity of Rho-kinase pathway observed in arteries of hypothyroid 2-week old rats persisted in adult rats. Thyroid hormones may be needed for maturational decline of Rho-kinase in vascular smooth muscle. Thyroid deficiency induces diverse alterations of NO-pathway activity in different vascular beds, which may be due to the differences of thyroid hormones synthesis and reception in arterial walls. Coronary arteries showed most pronounced alterations after early hypothyroidism, which may be a risk factor for development of cardiac pathology.
