The occurrence of syntax has been mentioned in a number of intriguing features of bird songs that brings them closer to the human speech or written text. The study of syntactic patterns in the sequences of discrete and stereotyped signals looks particularly relevant in light of the extraordinary complexity of the "acoustic texts" in some species of songbirds. Two basic types of syntax can be recognized in a variety of songs: linear and combinatorial. Also we discuss the modes of grouping of vocal patterns and the manifestations of memory in the song of birds
