First discovered in the CO oxidation catalytic activity of quasi-1D metals: Pd, Nb, Pt and AuCu nanowires, obtained by laser ablation of the original metal in superfluid helium medium [1]. Typical TEM micrograph of Nb nanowires with a thickness of about 4 nm is shown in Fig. 1. The structure of the Nb wires retained by heating up to 350 °C. Catalytic tests of nanowires, deposited on glass filters, were performed in microcatalytic pulse reactor. Fig. 2 compares the dependences of CO equilibrium conversion on the temperature for nanowires of different metals. It can be seen that the reaction rate increases sharply near 250 °C. In repeated tests in cooling-heating mode the wires retain high activity. Comparison of the temperature dependences of CO conversion for the wires and particles of close diameter, deposited on Al2O3 by laser electrodispersion, ion exchange and impregnation methods, revealed the features of the behavior of quasi-1D metals in catalysis.
