Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) were grown by metal-assisted chemical etching. Aqueous suspensions of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared by ultrasound grinding of SiNWs in water. It is shown that SiNPs are low toxic and they can be used both as luminescent labels and as sonosensitizers of the ultrasound assisted therapy of cancer. In general, the presented results demonstrate new prospects of theranostic applications of such silicon nanoparticles.
