The Unity of Humanity and Heaven and Multiple Modernities Chinese civilization is an integral part of world civilization, but since the “Axial Age” (roughly 500BCE), together with Greek, Judaic, and Hindu civilizations, Chinese civilization has emerged as a distinctive form of life comparable to the other three civilizations with her own humanistic self-reflexivity, historical consciousness, worldview, social structure, political organization, and value-orientation. For more than two thousand years, although the Sinic form of life has encountered several disastrous crises, to this date, it has been one of the most continuous and influential civilizations in the world. Since the mid-19th century, Chinese civilization has been confronted with unprecedented challenges—Westernization, modernization, and globalization. Chinese intellectuals blamed traditional culture as the main reason for China’s backwardness as compared with the West. They have adopted a series of utilitarian and short-sighted measures to cope with the situation. Although this process of anti-traditionalism has been subsided recently, it is still in progress. In the mid-20th century, human beings came to the realization that the environment had been so seriously damaged that it was rapidly reaching a point of no return. Human self-destruction in economic, political, social, and ethical realms as well as in the environment has inspired a variety of new philosophical thoughts and ecological ideas. The “unity of humanity and Heaven” is an essential spiritual resource in the development of Chinese civilization. We believe that this ancient wisdom can provide a fresh perspective on dealing with the difficulties threatening the viability of the human species. It may also provide reference to construct a new order of peaceful coexistence among different civilizations. The Forum will be divided into two simultaneous sessions: 1. In search of common values in cultural diversity (“the unity of humanity and Heaven” may serve as an example). 2. Multiple Modernities or Multifaceted Modrnity.
