WESTMEDFLUX Post-Cruise Meeting @ Oceanographic Centre of the Baleares, Palma de Mallorca, November 13 and 14, 2019 Rationale of meeting In 2016 and 2018 two oceanographic cruises were undertaken on the R/V Atalante in the framework of the international WESTMEDFLUX project, coordinated by Sorbonne University. This project aimed to study the presence of thermal anomalies on the ocean-continent transitions of the Western Mediterranean, and to understand the role of different continental margin processes (fluid migration, salt deformation, volcanic intrusions and tecto-sedimentary evolution) on the thermicity of the margins. It also included a study of turbidite and contourite deposits, seamounts, mud volcanoes and pockmarks. The new data acquisition has been focused on the Gulf of Lion margin, West Sardinia margin and South Baleares margin, and resulted in a total of ± 200 new heat flow measurements, 40 sediment cores, 2 dredging sites and 6000 km of on-track geophysics (multibeam and sub-bottom profiler). During the meeting we present the post-cruise analyses on the different collected data and material, discuss the models and interpretations, and define a strategy for an efficient valorization of the results and for a continued collaboration. We also organize a one-day geological excursion on the Mallorca Island in order to learn on the deformation and alteration processes of geological deposits that may also have affected the studied offshore areas.
