On 29 May 2016, WorldFertilizerMarket (Chem-Courier) organized a round-table discussion in Moscow, Russia. In the course of this event, the editor of WorldFertilizerMarket publications Alyona Moroz and the senior market analyst Julia Kryvorot made a presentation on the Potential for CIS Urea Exports Growth, with the attendees involved into the discussion of the following main issues: • Changes in the global market standing of the CIS urea producers in the last few years • New urea projects in the CIS and the prospects for a rise in granular urea exports • Key outlets where the CIS urea producers may increase their market shares and new potential trade flows As for now, the total urea capacities of the CIS countries top 15 million t, 57% of which is in Russia. In 2015, the CIS accounted for 6% of the global urea production and for 16% of the global trade in the commodity. According to WFM’s data, the CIS urea plants were running at average utilization rates of 77% last year. The companies from Russia and the other CIS countries have ambitious plans to further expand their ammonia and urea capacities. A large number of new prilled and granular urea projects are planned to be launched in the region before 2022. Those projects are export-led for the most part. Producers are also working on the renovation of the existing ammonia and urea units to reduce costs and increase energy efficiency, thereby becoming more competitive in the global market. Eurochem, Uralchem, NIIK, Baltic Urea Plant, and Wilson International have shared their thoughts and comments on the above questions. The participants found the event very helpful and noted the importance of studying the prospects for urea production and exports growth in the CIS as well as possible changes in the urea trade flows and the global urea market supply/demand balance.
