Chemistry is at the heart of many scientific fields and provides tracks toward many societal challenges currently faced by mankind. The past decades have witnessed the birth and rise of Supramolecular Chemistry as one of the most fertile scientific disciplines, celebrated by two successive Nobel Prizes. Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn pioneered the field with Dr Charles J Pedersen and Prof Donald J Cram in 1987 through the "development and use of molecules with structure-specific interactions of high selectivity". These seminal studies redefined the rationale and potentiality of the molecular toolbox and completed it with an unprecedented supramolecular set. With this new paradigm, the scope of accessible molecular architectures exploded exponentially, prompting the enthusiastic training of newcomers in the field, among which some of them became key players. Nearly 30 years later, Prof J Fraser Stoddart was awarded the 2016 Chemistry Nobel Prize with Prof Bernard L Feringa and Dr Jean-Pierre Sauvage "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines" and also for the discovery of the mechanical bond. This 2016 distinction celebrates the 30 years of intense scientific activity focusing on the design of exquisite molecular architectures with incredible properties by researchers all over the globe. We are honored and pleased to organize a symposium devoted to Supramolecular Chemistry with the Nobel Laureates Prof Lehn and Stoddart among other highly distinguished speakers of the field. The symposium taking place at University of Lyon will provide a program of 4 plenary and 10 keynote lectures with an international audience of several hundred researchers from academia and industry. The key thread of the symposium will of course be supramolecular chemistry and chemical engineering towards complex architectures through a combination of speakers presenting the latest applications in numerous fields related to current major challenges (e.g. diagnosis, material science, therapeutics, catalysis, sustainable development, information storage, molecular robotics) with a focus on the human dimension of the profession.
