The interaction between intense ultra-short laser pulses and matter constitutes a new field of research. It challenges the experiment and also theory, since a non-perturbative description with regard to high non-linear multi-photon processes is required. So far, the biggest breakthrough which has emerged from the experimental and theoretical attosecond research in this highly non-linear non-perturbative regime of laser-matter-interaction, was the creation and measurement of attosecond pulses. Having them at our disposal we are at the beginning of a new scientific era, the age of attosecond science. It will give researchers a completely new microscopic insight into electron processes, taking place in atoms, molecules, biosystems, clusters, semiconductor nanostructures or plasmas. They can be observed in real-time and even controlled to an increasing extent on their natural (attosecond) time scale. The main purpose of the workshop will be to discuss the current status of attosecond research and the obstacles for further development of attosecond measurements towards shorter time intervals and higher intensities, as well as methods to resolve them. A second important aim is to discuss, understand and propose new applications of attosecond technique in biology, chemistry, physics and plasma physics.
