he Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering of Northumbria University will host the 2018 edition of the LMS Northern Regional Society Meeting and Workshop on "Advances in the Theory of Nonlinear Waves", 23-25 May. Theoretical advances and the development of new mathematical tools for the analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations resulted in a better scientific understanding of nonlinear wave phenomena in many fields, ranging from nonlinear optics to hydrodynamics, plasma physics, as well as biological systems, and touching upon the theory of general relativity and the theory of topological knots. The universality of the equations describing wave processes is one of the most important components of this success, with the nonlinear Schrödinger and the Korteweg-de Vries equations being the most prominent illustrations of this occurrence and originating from the efforts to understand and explain various nonlinear wave phenomena ranging from optical communications to Bose-Einstein condensation or ocean waves. In turn, recent advances on the experimental side, for example in nonlinear optics and in oceanography, have stimulated further research on the theoretical aspects of nonlinear wave phenomena and their mathematical description. Results obtained in this long-standing quest will be the focus of the LMS workshop on "Advances in the Theory of Nonlinear Waves". The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers who have an expertise in different aspects of the theory of nonlinear waves, fostering collaborations between universities in the area and among the wider UK and international community. [Modulational instability in vector NLS] The LMS workshop on "Advances in the Theory of Nonlinear Waves" will start at 13:00 on Wednesday, 23rd of May, and finish at 13:00 on Friday, the 25th of May. The day of Thursday will be closed by a poster mini-talks session. The LMS meeting will start at 14:00 on Friday, the 25th of May, in Nixon Hall, and finish at 17:45. The meeting programme features three lectures aimed at a general mathematical audience, delivered by Dr T. Grava (Bristol, SISSA), Prof S. Lombardo (Loughborough), and Prof N. Smyth (Edinburgh). The LMS meeting will be followed by a reception and the LMS meeting dinner at Blackfriars Restaurant at 19:30. Please get in touch with organisers if you with to attend the dinner as there is a limited number of spaces. There are funds available to contribute in part to the expenses of members of the London Mathematical Society or research students registered at UK universities to attend the meeting and workshop. Requests for support, including an estimate of expenses, as well as all queries about the two events may be addressed to the organisers: Dr Benoit Huard and Dr Matteo Sommacal. The LMS Northern Regional Society Meeting and Workshop 2018 are supported by the London Mathematical Society and Northumbria University.
