Аннотация:The capabilities of a procedure developed for determining polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) with the use of negative ion chemical ionization are demonstrated. PCBs and, partially, PCDDs can be determined by this procedure in extracts from water without additional cleanup. Concentrations of PCBs in Lake Baikal were found in the range 0.03-0.06 mu g/L, which is close to the background level. Although water is polluted by PCBs from the Baikal Pulp-and-Paper Mill for the most part, the pollution is local. It is likely that the pollution of the lake by PCDDs and hexachlorodibenzodioxin, which were detected both in fish from Baikal and in wastewater from the pulp-and-paper mill, is most hazardous.
