By a direct numerical calculation of the partial phases of scattering of neutrons on the nuclei 12C and 16O it is shown by means of the optical model for the energy interval of 0 to 200 MeV that the Levinson theorem (δ(0)-δ(∞) = nπ, where δ(E) is a scattering phase and n is the number of bound states with a given total angular momentum and parity proves also valid for a complex potential varying smoothly with energy, n being the number of one-particle bound states. The level schemes of the nuclei 13C and 17O from the survey of Ajzenberg-Selove and Lauritsen are used in the analysis. © 1963.
