While space charge effects due to presence of many ions are currently among the major factors limiting the mass accuracy and dynamic range of the modern mass spectrometry instrumentation, there are no widely available software tools to assess these effects. Recent advances in the parallel computer hardware and software tools for parallel programming make graphics processing units (GPUs) of desktop computers practical and efficient tools for high-performance computations. We are developing a high-performance computational platform that harnesses the power of GPU both for calculation of the (quasi-)electrostatic fields and simulation of the ion motion with account for ion-ion and ion-electrode interactions and will present platform design and initial benchmark data. Use of CUDA and GPUs to drastically accelerate calculations of electric fields and many ions (10^6) motion on desktop computers.
