Chlorination of fullerenes at high temperatures may result in cage shrinkage by the single or multiple loss of C2 unit. Usually, each C2 loss is accompanied by the formation of cage heptagon flanked by pentagon pairs. Several cases of such processes in C86, C88, and C100 were presented. It was shown on the example C100 that C2 loss can result not only in creation of heptagons but also in their elimination.
